The U.S. Army on the Border Collection consists of real photo postcards and photographs of U.S. Army and National Guard troops serving along the U.S. - Mexico border in the early 20th century. All aspects of military life are captured, including servicemen on duty, in camp, in training exercises and out on excursions. Some of the postcards were mailed to family and friends and included notes of personal experiences, providing first-hand accounts of soldiers' activities and sentiments.
Many of these images are directly related to the Mexican Expedition of 1916-1917, also known as the Punitive Expedition into Mexico or the Pancho Villa Expedition. Amidst the Mexican Revolution, Pancho Villa's forces attacked Columbus, New Mexico on March 9, 1916, resulting in American casualties. Thousands of National Guard troops across the United States were mobilized and sent to the border in defense and President Woodrow Wilson authorized General John J. Pershing to lead a force into Chihuahua, Mexico in pursuit of Villa for his capture. These events are illustrated in some of the postcards and photographs included in the collection.
Addtional assets will be included in the collection as they are cataloged.
